Preferred configuration (Recommended)
This is a description of today's common configurations used to access the internet. Using this hardware and software, you will be able to enjoy full use of the internet.
Typical hardware and software capabilities:
Systems
IBM PC
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Macintosh
Macintosh II or better. Preferred systems run at 33MHz or faster |
At least 15mb of free space on a hard disk drive for Internet software and mail |
4mb RAM or more (8mb is the practical minimum for things to work well) |
9600bps or faster modem (14.4K or 28.8K modem preferred), V.42BIS or MNP5 compatible |
PPP and MacTCP software, Netscape or Mosaic World Wide Web browser, and other appropriate software including Eudora for e-mail |
These are the lowest-cost computers that can connect to, and use, the WCNet system. These systems are not capable of quality connections to the internet, and will not be able to provide the type of internet experience that a properly powered computer can offer.
With a system like one of these a subscriber will be able to do these things:
Use Lynx to browse through World Wide Web sites, including resources at local libraries, as well as information about Wood County government, businesses and residents from the WCNet World Wide Web site. Many locations may not support this type any more, and Lynx will only show the text content of these sites, no graphics |
Write and read messages on local and international newsgroups |
Send and receive electronic mail with a personal mailbox |
Chat with people locally and around the world with Internet Relay Chat |
